Just talked to a nice young lady from the Air Force who informed that until at least Oct. '07, the Air Force is good and full of all Officers except those with degrees in Aviatronics. She recommended the Navy, and told me to talk to a recruiter who knows something about anything (with a degree, you don't take the ASVAB).

Back to square one.

I'm sort of confused here. I totally get the early/midlife crisis thing, and it's certainly not all together bad. But I really don't get the extremes, or what the appeal is of the military. In my experience, the military is the route of choice for one of two types. First, the gun ho, flag waiving, I need to risk my life for my country types, the second is the desperate, people with few ways to make it out of their situation. Yes, you can request certain geographical areas, but trust me, Air Force bases are usually in the middle of nowhere. Serious nowhere. My ex husband was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base. It took 20 minutes to get off the base. And that's no exaggeration.

What is it about medicine that appeals to you? I assume it's the working in men's health aspect. Have you considered nursing? Or maybe even PA school? Does the math and science aspect appeal to you? If not, there's many careers in Public Health that are more social in focus than physical. I'd be happy to talk to you about the industry, if you'd like.

PA's are physicians assistants, it's a growing career that is sort of between nursing and being a doctor. You tend to only see the routine patients, and can prescribe some meds, but only in your speciality. It's still hard, but slightly less organic chemistry.

Perhaps the social sciences would hold more appeal for you, LGBT research is a hot field right now. I'll see if I can find an article or two about that.

(ps- 30k is not great money. It's not bad, when you consider that if you get shipped off to war, you lose those housing benefits, it's really not that awesome)

I was having personal training this morning, and the trainer said that my form is really good. And then she said, "You're going to be an instructor, I can tell." I'm taking it as a sign.

Go-go dancing for you, my boy!
