Orientation + Third Thursday with Jeff
Aug. 22nd, 2008 03:52 pmThursday - Even though orientation didn't start until 8 or so, I got there around 7:30, so I was waiting for a while before things got going. There was breakfast there, but I didn't know there was going to be, and my TVP was healthier for me than the bagel I would have had anyway. The first speakers were decent, if not memorable. The speaker just before lunch, who was also the longest speaker, was simply terrible. He rambled, made very little sense, and worst of all, emphasized some words with a plie. Ridiculous. We were given a break then, though I didn't really have anything to do on it. After the break, a gent from the career services center came in and gave about the best pep talk ever regarding our futures in law. He talked about the importance of finding your niche in the law world, how that basically is the difference between all those unhappy lawyers you hear about and the ones who love what they do. Also had a great lecture from two folks from our student body. I felt really bad - none of the speakers during the day allotted time for questions, so by the time I got to them, I didn't write the ones I had down. Naturally, this left me floundering when they got to the Q&A portion of their presentation. Heard from a few more speakers, then lunch time. Lunch was a disappointment - they had a veggie sammich, but it had about 3 slices of cheese on it. Bah. I had a banana, a bagel (from the morning), and a bag of chips. I shouldn't have had the chips (for that matter, I shouldn't have had the bagel), but i was hungry, and the fact that it was free was too much to pass up.
Ken had gone to the gym again after work, which I certainly can't hate on, so I did my workout at home while I waited for him. He got back with just enough time to get changed before going to meet Brandon for food somewhere before game. I putzed about, went back and forth on whether or not to attend the SDYP function, beat off, and finally decided to. It was supposed to be Wine and Cheese, and we were supposed to bring a bottle of wine. My budget doesn't include even Two Buck Chuck right now, so I decided I wouldn't drink and use that as my excuse. I'm glad indecision made me fashionably late, since Kevin and Brett were the only ones there when I got there. We chatted a while, were eventually joined by a gent named Trez, and then Rafael and his bf. Raf and bf tapped out after about a half hour, and Brett about an hour after that. Justin was supposed to show up, and Kevin kept telling us to stay and wait for him, so I did. I eventually had a cocktail (or two), and just as I was about to leave, Jeff messaged me to say he was on his way over. Justin never showed, and Jeff didn't drink, but I had several more cocktails, especially once I discovered Kevin's hazlenut liquor. I was pretty much good and sloshed when we finally left for Cheers. I spent about two seconds in there before going outside to chat with Jeff. He talked about how he got HIV, which was from his good friend that had just recently visited, and how the whole thing played out with his ex. It was getting late, so he walked me home after that. I ate some PB when I got home, drank some water, and crashed on the couch.
