Oh, Just Meth
Dec. 30th, 2020 10:35 amI took care of eservice in the morning and put all of Din's mail into my folder. I am not very good at delegating. Kathy noticed a little later, split it up between her, Kris, and myself, and suggested I take tomorrow off. No. I like my job, we're going to be short staffed tomorrow, and we already get Friday off. The extra free time wouldn't outweigh the guilt of leaving my work for them.
That Orlando fellow hadn't followed up about hooking up, but did make some very methy FB posts, such as one saying he didn't hate hos....only to write how much he hated them in the first/only comment. On his own post. He texted me clucking about how I was a meth addict and have no honor and....just rambling at a certain point. I swear, I'll get back to hoing one of these days, but these parTy boys throwing me in the briar patch of celibacy aren't really making a great case for expediency. I also batted around a Trumpet, and even openly admitted I was just using them as a lesson to others. I didn't think I could get more condescending, but here we are.
Sean messaged me asking for help, so I headed over on my lunch break. He lives in one of those cottages behind a regular house, and I stopped and chatted with the owner since she had a cat. The cat was a rescue, and apparently one of her kittens died halfway through birth. Sean was out of money but has worked it out with her to move out and get caught up on rent by March. Unfortunately, he's also been using a lot, and was developing that standard methy paranoia. Unlike usual, he had the self awareness to know that it might well be methy paranoia. But wasn't sure. I talked to him as well as I could, but had to get back to work. He'd invited a private investigator over for a consultation, and I had to leave about halfway through the meeting. Even the brief bit I'd been there for was actually very useful, since I often talk people down from methy paranoia. Queries like whether items were moved and the like. Eventually, the investigator was able to talk him down, sort of. Said there was a 50% chance they were really spying, 50% chance he just needed to detox, so might as well try that first.
As comfortable as I am as a hermit, I did perk up some at the human contact. I asked for recommendations for a new drug, since weed is so inconsistent, but since he's also an addict, he just noted that we'll never get high enough, on anything. I brought up the "novel reward center" Jeff mentioned, and apparently Jeff had visited him recently. Jeff is definitely highly addicted to meth at the moment.
I really meant to work on any of my side projects after work, but working from home only to "go home" to work in the exact same spot is hard. I smoked, had a couple drinks (tequila, even), and watched some Big Mouth. Craig messaged me, asking if Tim was crashing here. He'd messaged me after TG, but I was embarrassed over having blacked out. This time he was just trying to drum up support for some Dems, and wanted to talk to registered Dems. I'm pretty sure that much like Sanders, I'm Independent, but almost always vote Blue. I conquered my own jealousy and put him in touch with Allan, since Allan is very active in the local political scene. They already know each other, but had like...lost contact or something.
I let Lady Miss Friday out for a bit in the evening, but she didn't last long, and I had to slam the door shut (as much as you can "slam" a sliding glass door) to keep Merryweather from running outside. She seemed fairly upset, really, and I had to talk myself down with the knowledge that she would die horribly and quickly outside. But I also promised myself to buy new paper for them soon, and maybe even set up a maze in Mouse Kingdom's basement or something.

Date: 2021-01-02 06:09 pm (UTC)Any time people give the advice of "just block them and move on!", I'm quite open about my reasons for continuing to engage. 1) I don't feel comfortable letting their nonsense reverberate louder in an echo chamber, and 2) either they can be reached with rational discussion (unlikely) or you can peel back that thin veneer of coherence and expose the insanity underneath. And since others reading are not directly involved, even if they would otherwise agree with the person you're educating, they have less defenses in their Cognitive Dissonance Fortress. There's also that tenet of psychology where being exposed to extreme views will cause people to back off from them, even if, as above, they would otherwise agree. I cannot for the life of remember the name of it, and I'm failing at Google's algorithm to find it. It's at least touched on in this article involving motivational interviewing, though of course further searching on motivational interviewing still hasn't landed me with the term I'm looking for. "The basic idea is that rather than confronting someone’s beliefs head on, you present them with such an extreme, absurd version of their own beliefs – for instance, through leading questions – that they willingly reconsider and soften their original position." - https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20200930-how-to-politely-and-productively-disagree
I do, of course, need to get better at the diplomacy they touch on, and work on reaching the person involved in the discussion, instead of just using them as a punching bag for the audience at home. Anyway, this was I think the first time I've had that analysis within the active discussion, in open view of the person I'm punching. As though they weren't really there, or more importantly, because them knowing that they're being used as an example gives them no power to change it.
