I know I just posted, but this has been on my mind for some time now. I mentioned a while back that, out of nowhere, I had the urge to start playing video games again, and started with Legend of Dragoon (which is a fantastic game, just not expansive enough, and occasionally makes no sense), and have now moved on to my favorite video game ever, Final Fantasy 7. I was reading a Wikipedia entry that talked about common themes, and I’d been thinking for a while about the fairly standard way that the central beginning to all the FF games I’ve played is struggle against a major ruling power, be it an actual empire/kingdom or a corporation so large that it might as well be. Then I read things like this: http://www.amnestyusa.org/diamonds/index.do, and I note other atrocities being committed around the world, and I wonder if the games writers are trying to tell us something.
In the end, it’s a fairly common theme, the little guys against the big guys, and it’s recurring because it’s been successful, but I think on it from time to time, and I think you should, too.

On an unrelated topic, I received a call yesterday from an Army recruiter. I've often daydreamed about joining the military, getting in shape at boot camp, training up in computers or some other field, and then remembering to mention that I'm queer. I get trained, gay-rights groups get to add more to their statistics, and the Army gets a big "Wah-Wah". Obviously, this is more daydream than anything else, but I am considering calling back this particular recruiter, setting up a plan, signing the documents, and then, at the last second, mentioning that whole "gay" thing I've got going. Anthony says I would just be making more work/aggravation for folks who are not to blame for the current policies, and can't do anything to change them. I kind of sympathize, kind of, but I can't reconcile their decision to work for and in such a system. The big stopping point for me is that going through with this now means I'll have to close the door on the aforementioned daydream, and I like to keep my options open. :D
